Hurricane Preparedness

As we approach the peak of hurricane season, we know you’re doing everything to keep your facility prepped for a potential storm. Knowing the best way to prepare your Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system, for that time when you may need to vacate the facility during a hurricane, is vital.

Here’s a few tips on how to prevent issues with your UPS system during an emergency:

  • Conduct a study prior to hurricane season to determine whether you will need the load circuits to remain powered during the storm.

    • If the UPS system is required during the storm, leave it in normal operation.

    • If the UPS system is not required during the storm, put the system into bypass operation and disconnect the battery. The most common issue after a storm occurs when batteries have been over-discharged while they were left connected. There may be circuits within the UPS that can drain the battery, even while on bypass. If a battery is drained too low, the manufacturer recommends that they be replaced.

  • Be mindful of the location of your critical UPS systems. If your system is in a low area or a place that is known to flood, if possible, try to move the system to higher ground or an area that hasn’t previously flooded.

  • If the UPS system is in an area that may flood, make sure all sources of power have been removed. This includes the AC input Power (usually 480 VAC, 3 Phase), battery input and bypass.

    • If your UPS system has experienced flooding, contact our experienced service team. Depending on the flooding circumstances, our team has had past success in restoring systems at our facility by intensive cleaning and parts replacement, if required. We can only attempt to restore a unit that was not connected to a power source at the time of the flooding.

  • Perform annual preventive maintenance as part of your hurricane preparedness plan. This will help ensure the system and batteries are ready to perform in a worst-case scenario.

By following these tips, it will give your critical power systems the best chance at performing through a natural disaster when needed.
