Our experts at AMETEK Solidstate Controls set out to develop a new charger that would offer a dependable and cost-effective solution to battery charging in the transmission and distribution industry. From this concept came the modular Ascend High Frequency Charger, an excellent addition to our battery chargers and rectifiers. Ascend is a digital signal processor (DSP) controlled, Switchmode Rectifier system designed for high-efficiency conversion of incoming commercial AC power to clean DC power. Ascend is used to maintain charge to batteries and supply power to instrumentation equipment at substations such as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed controls systems (DCS), protective relays and fault recorders.
Ascend has many advantages. Since this charger primarily serves the transmission and distribution industry, it fits the many unique needs of substations. With many of these applications being located in remote areas, it can be difficult to quickly access the charger if a problem arises. Ascend works with this problem, and not against it, in a number of ways:
- Ascend sends out an alarm notification to predetermined contacts.
- Ascend modules utilize load sharing so even if one module stops working, the output will continue running. This allows for grace in the time it takes someone to access the remote facility.
- Ascend modules are easily accessible, so replacement is quick and simple, making for a low mean time to repair (MTTR).
We recognize that with many chargers it can be difficult to read and process their data due to rudimentary display screens. Ascend overcomes this by featuring a 5-inch diagonal animated LCD Touch Screen Display. This display makes it quicker and easier to determine the status of your system with a large screen size, additional colors and animations, as well as animated process flow, voltage and alarm readings. Additional features of this display include:
- Support for Network Time Protocol (NTP)
- Access to the data log from the LCD
- Option to disable the USB port
- Optional USB-enabled alarm for added security
- Ability to customize alarm relay configuration
