Our products are known to withstand the test of time with a 20 – 40-year design life. We pride ourselves in making a quality product that you can rely on for many years to come. So, what exactly gives our products longevity even in the harshest of conditions?

There are a multitude of factors to consider when it comes to securing a full life span for your system. Below are five key product designs that ensure the longest possible life:

  • Transformer (or Magnetic Component) Insulation System Rating – Our systems are rated to 200˚C, whereas a lesser quality system is typically rated at 180˚C.  We designed our systems for a temperature rise less than 110˚C above a 40˚C ambient, which allows for a 50˚C margin before it exceeds the insulation rating of 200˚C. A lesser quality unit offers around 130 - 140˚C temperature rise and in a 40˚C ambient they will be at their maximum rating of 180˚C. The life of a system is doubled with every reduction of 10˚C.

  • Low Power Factor – Our Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) systems are designed to tolerate a low power factor of 0.6, whereas the typical power factor is 0.8. Having lower power factor capability reduces the potential of overheating.

  • Laminated Bus – We design our bus to be compact; allowing for a more efficient use of space. Our laminated bus reduces transient voltage, which results in simplified snubbers and less parts. The bus also increases the life of IGBTs by reducing the overvoltage shock on the IGBTs and improving thermal characteristics by acting as a large heatsink surface.

  • Welded Cabinets – Our cabinets are welded to decrease vibrations and safeguard the life of the product.

  • Copper Winding Transformers – AMETEK Solidstate Controls transformers are made with copper windings, which offer lower resistance than aluminum versions you may see in the market. These transformers utilize less space because they are smaller and allow the system to run at a cooler temperature. We also use vacuum impregnation (VPI) with proprietary specification varnish to help increase the thermal stability of the transformer and reduce the audible noise.
